Abd al-Muttalib

Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim, chief of the Quraysh and custodian of Zamzam, rediscovered the sacred well, led Mecca's embassy to Abraha before the Year of the Elephant, and became the guardian of the infant Prophet Muhammad after his mother's death.

Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the father of Prophet Muhammad, was the son whose life was spared when his father's vow of sacrifice fell first on him. He married Amina bint Wahb and died on a journey while she was pregnant with, or had just borne, their son.

Atika bint Abd al-Muttalib was a paternal aunt of Prophet Muhammad, one of the six daughters of Abd al-Muttalib named in the classical genealogies. The approved sources consulted for this article establish little beyond her place in that family record.

Zamzam is the sacred well within the precincts of Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, believed to have been miraculously revealed by God to Hagar for her son Ishmael. Its water has been provided to pilgrims for millennia and holds profound spiritual significance in Islam.
