A surgeon trained in Edinburgh and London, he led the Indian Medical Mission to Turkey during the Balkan Wars of 1912–13, was a founder and later Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, and spent his career arguing for Hindu-Muslim unity within a single Indian nationalism.
