Persia

Historically Persia, the one major region taken by the early Muslim armies that kept its own language and culture while reshaping Islamic civilisation. Its Shi'a identity dates from the Safavids of 1501, and its clerical leadership governs the present republic.

The unprecedented territorial expansion of the Islamic empire under Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab (634-644 CE), which transformed Islam from an Arabian state into a world power spanning three continents through the conquest of the Sassanian Empire and much of the Byzantine Empire.

Salman al-Farsi was a Persian who left Zoroastrianism for Christianity, was sold into slavery on his way to Arabia, and became a Companion of Prophet Muhammad. His own first-person account of that search survives, and he is credited in the biographical sources with proposing the trench at Khandaq.

The Safavid Dynasty (1501-1736 CE) transformed Persia into a Shi'a empire, establishing Twelver Shi'ism as the state religion and presiding over a remarkable cultural, artistic, and architectural renaissance that shaped Iranian identity for centuries to come.
