Ayyub, the Job of the Bible, is named in four passages of the Qur'an and is the Islamic tradition's standing example of patience under trial. The Qur'an records his loss of wealth, family and health, his supplication, and his restoration, while naming no specific illness.

Prophet Yaqub (Jacob), grandson of Ibrahim and father of the twelve tribes of Israel, endured decades of grief over the loss of his beloved son Yusuf with a patience that became the Quranic paradigm of beautiful endurance (sabr jamil).
