Islam in Southeast Asia
The Indian Ocean Routes and the Archipelago
Islam reached Southeast Asia along the Indian Ocean trade routes rather than by conquest, carried from the thirteenth century by Muslim merchants, by Sufi teachers, and by rulers who accepted the faith and whose courts followed them.
The region now holds the largest Muslim populations on earth, and this collection gathers the articles that follow that history and the figures who shaped Muslim life in the archipelago.
It is a small collection in a corpus whose coverage of the region is still growing, and it exists so that those articles are reachable as a group rather than only through the periods they happen to fall in.
