Abdulmecid II

Abdulmecid II (1868-1944) was elected the last Ottoman caliph in November 1922 after the Grand National Assembly abolished the sultanate, and held the office until it too was abolished in March 1924. A painter by inclination, he lived out the last twenty years of his life in exile in Nice and Paris.

Mehmed VI Vahideddin (1861-1926) was the thirty-sixth and last Ottoman sultan, reigning from 1918 to 1922. He governed under Allied occupation, his government signed the Treaty of Sevres, and he left Istanbul on a British warship after the sultanate was abolished.
