Aleppo

A Syrian Hanafi scholar and editor whose critical editions of works of law and hadith brought many neglected texts into print. He introduced modern South Asian hadith scholarship to Arab readers and held one of the widest networks of hadith transmission of his generation.

Al-'Ijliyyah bint al-'Ijliyy (fl. 10th century CE) was an astrolabe maker active in Aleppo under the patronage of the Hamdanid emir Sayf al-Dawla, one of the few named women craftspeople of precision scientific instruments recorded in the medieval Islamic world.

Nur al-Din Zengi (1118-1174) united Muslim Syria under a single authority, made the recovery of Jerusalem a stated public purpose, and built the network of madrasas and institutions that carried the Sunni revival. His intervention in Egypt brought Saladin to power there.
