Children of the Prophet

The youngest daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and Khadijah, and the only one of his children to outlive him. She married Ali ibn Abi Talib and was the mother of Hasan and Husayn, through whom the Prophet's line of descent continues.

Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (d. 619 CE) was the first wife of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and the first person to believe in his prophethood. A woman of independent wealth in the Meccan caravan trade, she reassured him after the first revelation and took him to Waraqah ibn Nawfal.

Ruqayyah bint Muhammad was a daughter of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and Khadijah. She married Uthman ibn Affan and migrated with him to Abyssinia, the only one of the Prophet's daughters to do so. She died in Medina in Ramadan 2 AH during the Battle of Badr.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) had seven children according to the majority of early sources: three sons, al-Qasim, Abdullah and Ibrahim, who all died in childhood, and four daughters, Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthum and Fatimah. Only Fatimah survived him.

Umm Kulthum bint Muhammad was a daughter of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and Khadijah. After the death of her sister Ruqayyah she married Uthman ibn Affan, from which comes his epithet Dhu al-Nurayn. She had no children and died in Medina in Sha'ban 9 AH.

Zaynab bint Muhammad was a daughter of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and Khadijah. She married her maternal cousin Abu al-As ibn al-Rabi, who refused Qurayshi pressure to divorce her when she accepted Islam. She joined her father in Medina and died there in 8 AH.
