PersonAbdulmecid II (1868-1944) was elected the last Ottoman caliph in November 1922 after the Grand National Assembly abolished the sultanate, and held the office until it too was abolished in March 1924. A painter by inclination, he lived out the last twenty years of his life in exile in Nice and Paris.

PersonSurayya Tyabji (1919-1978) was an Indian artist from Hyderabad who, with her husband Badruddin Tyabji, worked on the final design of the Indian national flag in July 1947, replacing the Congress charkha with the Ashoka Chakra. She also drew the graphic version of the National Emblem.
